Garden Field Notes v.2
It's August! I didn't have the same garden boom I did last year, but I learned so much more in this year's process.
Lately, the squrriels have been taking EVERYTHING. My kale leaves. My lettuce. ALL of my grape tomatoes. My ONLY heirloom so far. I'm both annoyed and also in awe of how persistent Squrrielio must be. While I was weeding the side yard I found many of my grape tomatoes... so there's that.
To stop him and any of his neighborhood friends I crushed up eggshells and spread them in the garden. So..many...eggshells. I'm hoping this allows me to get at least a few more weeks of produce. The jallys are incredible; all of them. I'm so pleased!
David took his pepper plants to his place and they're thriving. I also enjoy having the extra space to spread my pots out and make sure things stay in the morning/afternoon sun.
Last thing: I've cleaned up the actual garden bed a ton. Next year I need to do way better with this to make sure any dead leaves are out of the way and plants are being shaded from the sun under the kale like they have been. Next year I want to give more space to the kale because I LOVE KALE and the other plants stuff take up much less space (green onions, 3 mini basil stalks, perennial tomato—the real champ).
